Synopsis: Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy is a highly portable methodology with great potential in young populations. This mini course will cover some important aspects and considerations in using fNIRS regarding toddlers and children. The course will cover experimental design and hypothesis formation to target young populations, montage and cap designs, and how to incorporate these aspects into the analysis. The course will further focus on signal analysis, such as filtering, artifact removal, and group level analysis. We will also include other methodological considerations such as short-channel measurements. Brief overview of the latest research studies and current field topics along with multimodality imaging will be provided.
Course structure: This mini course would cover several important areas. The experimental design portion would focus on the study/task design and hypothesis forming to better target the specific population and region of interest. The course will then cover the topics of montage design and how to incorporate these aspects into NIRS analysis, including recommendation regarding available software. We further would focus on overview of NIRS signal analysis including artifact removal, filtering, group level analysis and other methodological considerations such as short-channel measurements. We will include overview of the latest research studies on young cohorts to familiarize users with the current field topics, analytical steps and study design. The course will briefly touch upon multimodality imaging such as fNIRS-EEG to focus on benefits of such studies and recommendations on system design. The course will be designed to encourage interactive communication from attendees to better address their needs. We believe that this mini course offers unique educational value while targeting the important and growing research topics that are of interest to the fNIRS end users.
Learning objectives: Use of fNIRS in toddler and children, focusing on experimental design, system and cap solutions, and data analysis.
Requirements: You are expected to bring a laptop.
